While it may seem intuitive to prioritize hosts based solely on which offers the longest guarantee, the compensation terms – what a web host compensates you in the event it fails to honor the guarantee – are just as important (if not more so).
For example, Dreamhost offers one of the best uptime guarantees of all the web hosts we’ve reviewed (100%).
Its terms stipulate you will be compensated with one day of hosting for every hour of downtime and the compensation is provided in the form of a credit that can be spent on its services.
Again, that may sound good, however when you do the calculation it means the compensation for 24 hours of downtime is roughly $2.88.
Meanwhile, HostGator’s uptime guarantee is 99.90%. The difference between Dreamhost’s and HostGator’s guarantee is 0.10% which, on a monthly basis, equates to about 43 minutes; however, in the event HostGator fails to honor its guarantee it compensates you with one month of free hosting.
It’s also worth noting that some hosts, e.g. Bluehost, InMotion, GoDaddy, etc. don’t offer an uptime guarantee for their cheapest hosting packages.
