Facebook fandom: Facebook’s user base increases by 10% in the US and 27% in India
Facebook has increased the total number of users on its platform by 10 percent in the US and 27 percent in India year-on-year, according to the latest Global Digital Statshot from Hootsuite and WeAreSocial.
India and the US are also the two countries with the largest share of active Facebook users, with each accounting for 270 million and 240 million users respectively. Meanwhile, the US (120 million) and Brazil (61 million) are the two countries with the largest share of active Instagram users.
Facebook’s total active user count has increased from 2.167 billion in Q1 to 2.234 billion in Q2.
It also continues to grow its share of the global 18 to 24 years old demographic, with users in that demographic now numbering 620 million compared to 610 million in the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s 25 to 34 years old demographic has increased from 630 million in Q1 to 670 million in Q2.
While some reports suggest Facebook is losing a demographic war, its user base among both 18 to 24 year olds and 25 to 34 year olds still far outnumbers that of Instagram (which is also owned by Facebook).
Instagram has 250 million active users aged 18 to 24 and 240 million active users aged 25 to 34. Its total monthly active user count increased from 800 million in Q1 to 813 million in Q2.
Meanwhile, estimates by TechCrunch from 2017 suggest Snapchat’s entire user base is only 41 percent of the total number of Facebook users aged 18 to 24.
Interestingly, despite conventional wisdom suggesting Facebook is a social network for “older people,” Facebook’s 18 to 24 years old demographic accounts for 29 percent of its user base, while Twitter’s accounts for 26.3 percent of its user base.
Moreover, Facebook’s over-35 demographic accounts for 35 percent of its user base, while Twitter’s accounts for 44 percent.
The report also shows the number of active social media users worldwide has increased 13 percent year-on-year and now totals 3.297 billion.
Reddit also appears to have performed admirably over the last quarter and now outranks Twitter for total monthly active users (330 million). This is all the more astonishing as it represents a 32 percent increase quarter-on-quarter.
The latest data from Alexa also suggests Reddit, which has received criticism of late for its policies around hate speech on its platform, is the 6th most visited website in the world.
Christiano Ronaldo’s page has retained its status as the most liked page on Facebook with over 122 million likes. Of the top 20 most liked pages on Facebook, 13 are people while 7 are commercial interests e.g. brands like Real Madrid and Manchester United.
The top 20 continues to suggest that the most successful pages on social media provide entertainment, sports or information related services.
