Global domain name registrations now total 332.4 million
In its Domain Industry Brief for Q4 of 2017, Verisign, the registry for .com and .net top-level domains (TLDs), reports TLD registrations are up 0.9% year-on-year (YoY) and total registrations for TLDs now number 332.4 million.
Verisign’s report states that .com registrations now number 146.6 million and .net registrations number 21.4 million (an increase of 2.9 percent year-on-year). .cn (the top-level domain for China) is the second most popular TLD overall with 21.4 million registrations and the most popular country-code top-level domain (ccTLD).
The third most popular extension overall is .tk, the ccTLD for Tokelau, with 19.9 million registrations (.tk domains can be registered free of charge and expired .tk domains are taken back by the registry to be monetized).
The most popular TLDs are as follows:

According to Verisign, new generic top-level domain (gTLD) registrations now total 20.6 million and 6.2 percent of all domain registrations.
gTLDs emerged from a decision by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2012 to remove restrictions placed on the creation of TLDs. New gTLD registrations decreased 2.4 percent quarter-on-quarter and 19.5 percent year-on-year.
The most popular gTLDs are .loan (encompassing 10.9% of all registrations), .xyz (encompassing 9.4 percent of all registrations) and .top (encompassing 6.3 percent of all registrations).
Geographic TLDs, gTLD extensions which have a “geographic focus,” now number about 1 percent of all ccTLD registrations (64.8 million). The most popular geographic TLDs as a percentage of total geographic TLD registrations (665, 498) are .london (12.5 percent), .tokyo (11.3 percent) and .nyc (10.3 percent).
Verisign also reports on trending keywords, or rather the most popular terms in the new domain registration in Q4 of 2017. Unsurprisingly, cryptocurrency registrations take most of the top spots among .com and .net registrations.
